More than 500 have died in workplace accidents in past decade

Up to 520 people have been killed in work-related accidents here in the last 10 years. CEO of the HSA, Martin O'Halloran, said: "We are holding this to honour and commemorate those people who sadly lost their lives or were maimed in workplace accidents. Today marks International Workers Memorial day, which remembers those who have died and highlights the importance of safety at work. The Health and Safety Authority says most accidents are preventable and is encouraging companies to organise training for their staff. "And very importantly their communications and dialogue."

Minister Breen said: "Now in its third year, Workers' Memorial Day is recognised as making a valuable contribution to raising awareness of the issue of workplace health and safety. The collaboration of Congress, Ibec and the CIF is crucial if we want to continue these positive trends and Workers' Memorial Day has become an important national day of commemoration as a result of their support. The day is the national and annual commemorative event to remember people killed, injured and bereaved through workplace accidents. The continued partnership between Congress, the Construction Industry Federation, Ibec and the HSA provides leadership and support that raises awareness and helps to reduce fatalities and accidents. The third annual Workers' Memorial Day Ireland was marked today by the Government, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (Congress), the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), Ibec and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) collectively.

The North Carolina State AFL-CIO, the largest association of local and union councils in the state, organized a Workers' Memorial Day event at North Carolina's State Capitol on Friday.Family members held up signs with the pictures and names of loved ones who died on the job. Tyson said Berry couldn't make it because she's celebrating worker safety achievements in Charlotte. A bell rang for each of the 150 people who passed away while working in the state in 2015.The victims lost their lives unexpectedly, with causes ranging from a scaffolding collapse in downtown Raleigh to an industrial accident in Goldsboro. "It was something that was totally preventable.
