Alabama state troopers are investigating both deaths, which occurred about 7 miles (11 kilometers) apart on Alabama 117. The child, who investigators identified as Patterson's daughter, died at the scene. While a police investigation continues, friends of the child's father, Kevin Patterson, have arranged a fundraising account for him.
